Award-winning transportation and logistics company GlobalTranz provides shippers of all sizes with a wide range of shipping and supply chain management options. Based in Arizona, GlobalTranz specializes in freight management services, such as full truckload and less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping.
Full truckload (FTL) shipping is typically used when clients have at least 10 pallets that need to be moved from one destination to another. Most FTL shipments weight up to 45,000 pounds and take up an entire truck on their own. Since the full truck is dedicated to moving an FTL shipment, freight typically is not transferred between trucks at any point during the transportation process. This reduces the risk of damage and increases the speed at which a shipment is delivered. Unfortunately, the cost of FTL shipping can vary based on carrier, destination, the weight of the shipment, and the type freight being transported.
Meanwhile, LTL shipments do not take up an entire truck. These types of shipments typically consist of one to 10 pallets and can weigh up to 10,000 pounds. They are transferred between trucks more often and this can increase both shipping time and risk of damage. However, this is balanced out by the savings associated with many LTL shipments. Rather than paying for an entire truck, clients only pay for the portion of the truck that their shipment takes up. Further, the costs of LTL shipments are regulated by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA).
Shipping freight may seem like a very complex process due to the number of options available. It’s important to understand the differences between Full Truckload (FTL) shipping and Less Than Truckload (LTL) shipping because they are two of the most commonly used transportation options
